Zoe and Her Loss of Appetite Dilemma: A Day of Not Eating

Hello there people and of course, dogs like me! ( Hey, how could I forget to greet my canine family!) Zoe is back again to share stories based on my personal experiences. This time, I am going to tackle about loss of appetite in dogs. Uhmmm…probably you are wondering why I suddenly thought of telling about this, right? Well, basically because last week before we went out of town I somehow felt loss of appetite even if my Mom prepared by favorite dog food.

One Sunday morning, I suddenly woke up feeling quite lethargic as if I am not really interested to get up and take a walk around the house. This is ultimately different from how I feel each time I wake up in the morning. The feeling continued even after my Mom served me with my favorite dog food. I saw the upset look in my Mom’s face when the Zoe who ravenously chows down on every dog food she serves is not to be seen in my persona during that moment. Literally, she can really comment that I suddenly lose interest with food. Oh my! That’s very unlikely of Zoe!” I really heard her whisper that to my Dad.

I saw her head down to the phone and saw her dialling some numbers until I heard her speaking to someone. Gee! They were talking about me and my sudden loss of appetite in my foods. Though, I am really feeling wake, the always observant Zoe started to creep in and manage to listen to what they are talking about. As if my Mom, noticed that I am interested she turned on the speaker phone so that Dad (and maybe I!LOL) can hear what they are talking about.

Based on what the guy on the opposite line was explaining, one of the most possible reasons why dogs lose appetite is an underlying health problem. Infection, respiratory, problems in the GI tract, bone and other health problems can cause a dog to refuse eating. Kidney problems in dogs, Urinary Tract Infection in dogs, Hepatitis, Digestive Disorders in dogs, Dog Cancer, and Hookworms are some of the most common diseases that cause loss of appetite in dogs. Knowing that I had just gone to the vet for my monthly visit yesterday, my Mom is completely aware that this is probably not the reason why I suddenly lost my appetite.

On the other hand; there are other cases when losing appetite in dogs is not due to health problems. Stress can also be the reason for a dog to lose its appetite. Circumstances such as moving to a new place, having a new puppy in the house or lose of someone close with the household the dog has been used to be with can have an impact on why some dogs refuse to eat. This somehow rang a bell to my mind; maybe I am just too excited and anticipating for the near out of town travel with Dad.

There are also cases when medications for other ailments can cause loss of appetite in dogs. Another is when you are trying to introduce a new food to your pet. For the latter, it is advisable that you introduce new foods little by little to avoiding the feeling of being forced to eat something that your pet is not used to eating before.

After those ideas have been discussed it somehow provided quite a relief since both of us know that I am perfectly fine and losing appetite is sometimes normal to occur. It is really a good thing that my Mom and Dad never skip my scheduled visits to the vet. Knowing that I am in the pink of health gives us an assurance that my loss of appetite will later on subside. And true enough, after that day, I am now back to my real self, Zoe who ravenously chows down on my favorite dog food as soon as my Mom serves it to me. See you around, folks!
